MY SOIL DOES NOT ABSORB WATER: CAUSES AND SOLUTIONS
If you irrigate or it rains and water forms puddles, runs off the surface, or takes a very long time to infiltrate, the problem is almost never “the water”—it’s usually the soil. When the soil is “closed” (compacted, crusted, or with hardened layers), less water enters and less air as well. The result: shallower roots, poorer use of fertilization, and a more uneven crop.
The good news is that, in most cases, infiltration can be restored with a practical, phased plan—without having to “redo” the entire field.
HOW TO KNOW IF YOUR PROBLEM IS INFILTRATION (CLEAR SIGNS)
- Puddles form after irrigation or rain and take time to disappear.
- Water runs off instead of soaking in.
- A surface crust forms when the soil dries.
- The soil feels hard/compacted when using a shovel.
- Roots stay near the surface or branch poorly.
If there are also areas that consistently yield less, there is usually a structural issue or a localized hard layer.
7 COMMON CAUSES OF POOR WATER INFILTRATION
1) Compaction (the most common)
Compaction reduces soil porosity. Water enters with more difficulty, oxygen decreases, and root growth is limited. It is usually caused by working wet soil, heavy machinery, or repeated traffic.
2) Surface crusting
A hard “cap” forms on the surface (especially after heavy rain or sprinkler impact), causing water to run off. It also worsens seed emergence.
3) Sodic soils (structure collapse)
In soils with excess sodium, structure degrades, crusting increases, and infiltration worsens. The solution is to correct the structural cause, not just apply more irrigation.
4) Hardened layers (“hardpan”)
Sometimes the surface looks fine, but there is a compacted layer at 10–30 cm that blocks water and roots. This leads to surface waterlogging and shallow root systems.
5) Low organic matter and biological activity
Without stable structure and natural channels (roots, earthworms), the soil struggles to “breathe” and absorb water.
6) Over-irrigation
Even if the soil can infiltrate, applying too much water at once can exceed its capacity. This is common when irrigation timing or flow rates are not well adjusted.
7) Texture + management (not just “clay soil”)
A clay soil can infiltrate well if it is structured; a loamy soil can infiltrate poorly if it is compacted. Texture matters, but structure is key.
