PATCHES IN THE FIELD: AREAS THAT ALWAYS YIELD LESS (SOIL CAUSES)

There are fields that, season after season, show the same problem: areas that yield less. It doesn’t matter if fertilization is uniform, irrigation is well calculated, or management is correct. These “patches” keep reappearing. When this happens repeatedly, the cause is almost always in the soil.

Agricultural production depends directly on the physical and structural condition of the land. If the soil does not infiltrate water well, if it is compacted, or if roots cannot develop deeply, the crop does not respond the same way across the entire field. This is why areas with lower vigor, reduced development, and lower yield appear.

WHY THE SAME AREAS ALWAYS FAIL

When a specific part of the field produces less every year, it is usually not by chance. Soil is not homogeneous: there may be differences in structure, effective depth, infiltration, or chemical balance within the same plot.

One of the most common problems is localized compaction. It may be caused by repeated machinery traffic or areas where more weight is concentrated. The soil loses porosity, less water enters, and roots remain shallow. Even if the same fertilizer dose is applied, the crop cannot use it equally.

In other cases, the problem lies a few centimeters deeper. A hardened layer can prevent water and roots from penetrating. The result is a limited root system and lower nutrient absorption, which translates into less vigorous plants.

INFILTRATION AND STRUCTURE MAKE THE DIFFERENCE

Irregular infiltration is another frequent cause of patches in the field. If in certain areas water accumulates or takes too long to penetrate, root asphyxia occurs. The crop experiences stress even if irrigation is correct.

Structural problems related to sodicity or soil imbalances can also play a role. When structure degrades, the soil seals, surface crusts form, and infiltration decreases. Over time, these areas become weak spots that consistently yield less.

MORE FERTILIZER IS NOT THE SOLUTION

When an area produces less, the usual reaction is to increase fertilization. However, when the problem is physical or structural, additional fertilizer does not solve the cause. If roots cannot properly explore the soil or water does not circulate correctly, part of that investment is wasted.

Therefore, before increasing doses, it is worth asking whether the soil is allowing the crop to make use of what is already being applied. When patches repeat season after season, the solution lies in acting on the soil. Improving structure, enhancing infiltration, and creating a more active root environment is usually the turning point.
