CALCIUM AND SULFUR IN AGRICULTURE: WHY THEY MATTER
When a crop “doesn’t take off” or responds poorly to fertilization, the solution is often not to apply more fertilizer, but to improve the soil so the plant can absorb better. In this context, calcium (Ca) and sulfur (S) are two key elements: they influence root development, nutrient uptake, and overall soil performance.
WHY CALCIUM (Ca) IS SO IMPORTANT
1. Helps improve soil structure
In soils with high sodium (sodic or saline-sodic), the soil tends to “close up”: it becomes compacted, infiltration decreases, and oxygen availability for roots is limited. Calcium plays an important role in improving soil structure in these cases.
In practice, this means:
- Less sticky, more workable soil.
- Better root penetration.
- Improved crop response to irrigation or rainfall.
2. Promotes a stronger root system
When soil structure improves, roots can explore a greater volume of soil. This alone can make a significant difference during drought stress or in “uneven” fields.

Sulfur is an essential nutrient linked to plant processes such as protein synthesis and overall vigor.
